Penile Injection Therapy 1-Page
A Quick Guide to Intracavernosal Injections (ICI)
Penile injections, also known as intracavernosal injections (ICI), are a very effective treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED) that works by relaxing penile muscles to increase blood flow. This handout gives you the essential information you need to understand this therapy.
How It Works
The injection helps create a firm erection, usually within 5 to 20 minutes.
How to Use It Safely
- Injection Site: Injections should be done at the 2 o’clock or 10 o’clock position on the shaft of the penis to avoid nerves and blood vessels.
- Frequency: Do not inject more than once every 24 hours, and no more than three times per week.
- Potential Side Effects: While generally safe, side effects can include bruising, mild pain, scarring, or a prolonged erection (priapism).
A prescription and proper training from a healthcare provider are required to use this therapy.
