Sensate Focus Exercises
A Step-by-Step Guide for Couples
Sensate Focus is a structured, phased intimacy exercise designed to help couples reconnect and rebuild physical closeness after the challenges of cancer treatment. It is a powerful tool for reducing performance anxiety and re-introducing touch in a safe, non-pressured way.
The exercises guide couples through three distinct stages at their own pace:
- Non-Genital Touching: This first phase focuses on exploring non-sexual touch, helping partners reconnect physically without any expectation of arousal.
- Genital-Focused Touching: Once comfortable, couples can move on to include gentle, exploratory genital touch, still without the pressure of intercourse.
- Penetration (Optional): The final stage may include penetration, but only if both partners feel comfortable and ready. The focus remains on pleasure and connection, not performance.
Throughout the process, open feedback and communication are encouraged, creating a strong foundation for renewed intimacy that is built on trust and mutual pleasure.
